Horizontal weft threads and compacting passes secure the rows of knots. A knot is therefore not an isolated element: it belongs to a complete structure formed by warp, weft and pile.
This structure can be compared to the pixels in a digital image. More pixels provide the potential for finer detail, but resolution alone does not create a compelling image. Composition, colour and execution still matter. Likewise, greater knot density gives a weaver more scope to render intricate patterns, but it does not determine artistic or material quality on its own.
How Is Rug Knot Density Calculated?
The most reliable place to examine knot density is the back of the rug. On the front, the pile and finishing process can obscure the boundaries between individual knots. On the reverse, the pattern usually reappears as a field of small, visible knot points.
For a simple estimate, select an area measuring 10 x 10 centimetres on the back of the rug. Count the knots horizontally and the rows vertically, then multiply those two figures. Multiplying the result by 100 provides an approximate number of knots per square metre.
For example, if you count 30 knots across 10 centimetres and 30 rows within the same vertical distance, the 10 x 10 centimetre area contains approximately 900 knots. Multiplied by 100, this gives an estimated density of 90,000 knots per square metre.
This method is useful for orientation, but it is not a formal appraisal. Because the tension in hand weaving may vary subtly across a rug, measurements can differ between the central field, borders and corners. For a more representative estimate, measure several areas and calculate an average.
It is also important to note that the terms “knot,” “point” and “stitch” are not always used consistently by every producer. In some technical descriptions, the two visible ends of a single knot may be counted separately as points. When comparing products, ask whether the figures were calculated using the same method and unit.
How Does Knot Density Affect Pattern and Texture?

The clearest effect of knot density appears in the resolution of the design. Small flowers, curling vines, fine outlines, figures and layered borders require more individual points of colour. A denser weave allows the artisan to control transitions more precisely and define miniature motifs with greater clarity.
By contrast, broad geometric forms, bold medallions or intentionally restrained contemporary compositions may not require exceptionally high density. Weaving such a design with fewer knots is not necessarily a compromise; it may be a deliberate decision that suits the visual language of the piece.
Surface character
Closely and evenly placed knots can create a compact, orderly and refined surface. Yet the way a rug feels is never determined by knot count alone. Yarn fineness and twist, pile height, clipping and washing all contribute to its tactile character.
A densely woven rug made with substantial wool yarn may feel grounded and robust, while a high-density piece woven in fine silk may have a smoother surface that responds delicately to light. Both may be exceptional; their aesthetic intentions and sensory qualities are simply different.
Production time and labour
Between two rugs of the same dimensions, a higher knot count means that more individual knots must be tied. This usually translates into a longer production period, closer pattern tracking and greater labour. When every knot is formed by hand, the figure per square metre becomes more than technical data—it also represents the time accumulated within the weave.
Production time should not, however, be calculated from knot density alone. The rug’s dimensions, knotting technique, number of colours, complexity of the pattern, yarn thickness and number of artisans working on the piece all affect the total process.
Does a Higher Knot Count Always Mean Better Quality?
The short answer is no. Knot density is an important indicator of construction, but it cannot determine quality by itself.
A high knot count demonstrates the capacity to render greater detail and often indicates a longer period of labour. Nevertheless, a large number of knots tied with weak, unsuitable or poor-quality yarn may not surpass a less densely woven rug made with carefully selected natural fibres and balanced construction. Equally, a weave with inconsistent tension, distorted borders or an uneven surface is not automatically accomplished simply because its density is high.
The value of luxury hand weaving emerges where quantity and quality meet. The number reveals the scale of the work; the material, colour, proportion and mastery determine whether that work becomes an exceptional aesthetic object.
When comparing two rugs, the question “Which has more knots?” should therefore be accompanied by several others:
